It only seems like five minutes ago that I had a full cast from ‘Bugsy Malone’ asking me, “Please Miss, can we do another one?” Now, feeling fully revived from the success of ‘Bugsy’, the response to their question is “Yes! We can and we will do another one!” So here it is, in 2014, Cherry Willingham Community School will present the musical, ‘Oliver!’
We had a busy day of auditions on Wednesday 30 October, with both myself and Mr Flowers having the pleasure of listening to over fifty students individually sing such songs as ‘I’d Do Anything’ and re-create monologues from the famous musical. The standard, as always, was incredibly high, and as we left to go home that night, we knew we had a tough decision making weekend ahead (think judges houses on ‘X Factor’, and then treble it!).
Eventually, after much bickering (as you’d expect from two Drama Queens), we came to our final list, and as I sit and write this, students found out this morning who had secured a place in the cast. As with every audition process, there was some disappointment amongst students, but no one should feel disheartened, everyone who auditioned should feel proud of themselves.
So, now we have an Oliver, a scheming Fagin and an evil Bill Sykes, the hard work begins. We have 20 busy weeks of rehearsals. That means 20 weeks of singing some fabulous songs, 20 weeks of working with a new ‘cast family’ and most importantly, 20 weeks of fun!
I’ll keep you updated on our progress.
